I have proven to myself that the past does not equal the future. I have dumped the crutch of alcohol eight years ago and am living a live I truly enjoy. Yet, there are always new challenges. More importantly, the spectre of cross-addiction is always hanging over us addicts. In my case, the last three years have been full of challenges, stress and distress. In turn, the addict in me reached to food, and the nightly emotional overeating came at a price.

Christmas 2022 saw me weighing in at 144.5 kg (319 pounds) and I have made the decision to change that for good. But this is not a quick New Year’s resolution. We know that 90% of them will fail. Equally, this is no new wonder-diet. Instead, I will prove to you that this is not Mission Impossible. I will go back to school for you, and in turn, will become your guinea pig. I will figure out how to drop 1/3 of my body weight, whilst at the age of 56 working full-time in a sedentary job.

Going Back to School for You

In my lifetime, I have already gone to school for more than a quarter of a century (13 years school, 7 years university, 6 years specialist training in anaesthesia, 18 months specialist training in pain medicine and hyperbaric medicine). You think, I would have learned it all by now. In reality, over the last ten years the medical fraternity has learned so many new facts about the human body – it is truly mind-boggling. As such I have decided to undergo further training in functional medicine, a new discipline that specializes in understanding the intricate links between sleep, nutrition, exercise, hormones, inflammation, immune system changes and so much more. This is the foundation on which we can build new lives for all of us. Let’s learn how to live a life so full of energy, that we can regenerate the damage done in the past and prevent future self-destruction through improved body-maintenance.
